Destreza - The Boy and his Echo

Once upon a time there was an emo/geek/hyper-creative kid dwelling in the lands of the late-teen angst. He developed several music related endeavors such as an internet radio, (Radio Neurótica) a wide-range of electronic music projects (Miyagi, Jackson, E. Lebleu and Destreza) and a few DIY record labels and internet media outlets (Abolipop, Poni Republic, NWLA). He even helped to put on the spotlight such artists like Alejandro Ghersi aka Arca or his teen sweetheart back in those days: Carrie. He is relentless in his creative initiatives, today, he remains active as producer, dj, and an internet wizard. Here I’m talking about Eric Gamboa, I’m sure you had heard of this guy before, since he is almost ubiquitous.

Despite his high production and relative notoriety in some of those tasks, in a wicked joke, an irony in his fate, his opera-prima / album debut as Destreza, by far his more recognized moniker due to his aesthetic and technical aura, (his tracks could be described as something derived from teen angst in the shape of Emo Ambient meets Glitch Hip Hop meets IDM Broken Beats... kind of..), let’s ignore why, or the stories surrounding the reasons, it was almost 20 years ago, is useles to look for answers, besides, who has that prodigious memory? the fact is -The Boy and his Echo-, was never released.

Destreza was one of the first IDM projects in Mexico, as consequence, ‘The Boy and his Echo’, historically is, the first IDM album in the Mexican electronic music. These tracks still resound in our memories of past decades alternative music festivals, some of them still floats in our collective unconscious, but a few of those who listened a Destreza live set at beginning of this century, like myself, had the chance to access, first hand by the artist himself, to that album.

Eric thought those audio files were lost forever, but it turned out I had the full album in back-ups resting in a hard disk, hibernating, waiting to rise and see the light.

After a few mostly nonsensical talks about past and presents events, He decided to release his long-time lost album, he just said, let’s fucking do this, and as focused and devoted as an archeologist in front a Sumerian clay inscription, his album was remastered and now ready to go beyond, as it totally deserves it due to its cultural relevance and its uniqueness and musical value.
