The Rigor Mortis Experience - Stiff and Stuffed Stuff.

The Rigor Mortis Experience: with a name like that, you might reasonably expect some tonally rigid, musically bleak, gloom and doom project. Well, this isn’t Julie Andrews dressed as a nun singing about kittens and fluff for some Aryan family with ties to the Nazi party… but it’s not as heavy as being crushed by some cosmic black hole, either. In fact, this is a fluid little album. It flows like drainage coming out of a factory that produces rubber ducks (there is some color, here and there, amidst the digital muck). If you need a label to guide you, let’s go with post-industrial techno-dub. It’s not quite there, but it’s close.

The soundscapes here contained may be cluttered with the trashed paraphernalia of a planet caught in a loop of terminal-stage capitalism and heading straight towards a big black hole, but there’s also quite a bit of space in them— enough room for some gritty, haunting atmospherics to take place.

The Rigor Mortis Experience debut EP is a two-man laptop-guitar combo. Guitars are ineptly (yet earnestly) played by Eduardo Padilla (a.k.a. Molloy and his bike, well-known by records on Umor Rex, Noise Joy and Dog-Eared Records) who sometimes sounds like a little kid strumming a broken banjo to the sounds of the Velvet Underground’s European Son, and sometimes like a voodoo priest sipping mezcaline-spiked gazpacho while attempting to exorcize the spirit of Bo Diddley out of his right foot while using said foot to hit the wah-wah pedal. Yeah, it’s that kind of weird.

The other half of the Rigor Mortis is controlled by laptop magician/minimal techno and experimental ambient producer Edgar Medina (Umor Rex, Static Discos, Sleep FUSE), who uses this Rigor Mortis thing as an excuse to free himself from the elegant constraints of his Transistor and Alejandro Morse personas, and just let loose and wallow in the tasty, finely textured mud of his musical subconscious.

Speaking of texture, have you ever wondered what the texture of a coffin is like? From the inside? In the dark? The Rigor Mortis boys sure have. This is the result.
